The specific functions of the unit include hearing assessment to identify and quantify hearing loss, hearing rehabilitation wherein hearing aids fitting, programming is performed and advice for treatment is given; balance disorder diagnosis involving evaluating dizziness or vertigo to pinpoint vestibular issues, counselling and support in which guidance is provided on managing hearing loss, hearing conversation and communication strategies. All these functions are performed by the sisters and staff who are equipped with the right knowledge and experience. The unit boasts of soundproof room, which is properly insulated to ensure accurate hearing assessments free from external noise interference, and an Audiometer and accompanying devices to measure hearing sensitivity across various frequencies. There are different types of hearing loss which an audiometer can help identify and they are:
- Conductive Hearing Loss
- Sensorineural Hearing Loss
- Mixed Hearing Loss
Following the identification, it also helps in identifying the possible treatment type required for the specific type of hearing impairment.
Ear Mold Lab is an extension of the Audiology unit, where the cost-effective custom ear molds are manufactured for behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids; repairs, replacements, and modifications for existing ear molds are also done ensuring long-term usability for the beneficiaries. The typical process followed is give below:
- Taking Ear Impression: The ear is inspected for any obstructions (e.g., wax) or abnormalities. If necessary, the ear canal is cleaned. A foam or cotton dam is placed inside the ear canal to protect the eardrum and prevent the impression material from going too deep.
- Creating a Replica Mold: The impression is used to make a positive cast appropriate materials like plaster of Paris (POP) or dental stone.
- Make the Ear Mold: Liquid material is injected into the cast to create custom ear mold. Once hardened, the mold is removed and shaped manually
- Polished and Customized: The mold is smoothed and adjusted for comfort.
- Quality Check and Delivery: The mold is inspected for accuract=y and comfort, then fitted to the student’s ear.
