SUCCESS STORIES

Achievements/contribution of the institution in the past 17 years in the area of welfare of persons with disabilities and rehabilitation/education including technical education and vocational training to persons with disabilities.


1. The Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre (FSHC) began on 16th April 1996 with 2 very young children in the early intervention unit . Presently FSHC has the following to its achievement chart:

  • Special school for the deaf (HI), accommodating 165 students in classes Nursery – XII, 45 HI students integrated into the mainstream schools and 14 HI students in the Inclusive Education.

2.Vocational training Cum Production unit helps the rehabilitation of the Hearing Impaired and Orthopedically handicapped persons through:
  • Tailoring, Knitting, Candle making, Beads art, Greeting cards, Food processing, Live stock management, Basic in agriculture, horticulture & floury culture
  • One of the deaf boys is working as the orthotic, prosthetic technician, while the other deaf is the Indian Sign Language instructor.
  • One of the boys with orthotic problem works in the vision unit as the vision technician, while the other one help for packing the vocational products and as school bus assistant.
  • Three deaf adult women are serving as instructors in the vocational training.
  • Six adult men (5 orthopedically handicapped and 1 HI) as instructors in the vocational training.
  • Three HI adult women work as helpers in the school while Three adult HI women work in the production unit.

3.Other Achievements of the Institution
  1. Best Individual Award for the welfare for the Children with Disabilities from the Ministry of Social Justice and empowerment 2005.
  2. Best Institutional Award for the welfare for the Children with Disabilities from the Ministry of Women and Child Development 2009.
  3. Gurwar Award - Best Special teacher (eastern zone) for the Children with Disabilities from Germs foundation in collaboration with CNIBN and the Ministry of Human resource development 2009.
  4. National Award for the best Institution from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment 2012.
  5. Winners of 10 medals for the Silent Olympiad, Mumbai 2013.
  6. Winners of 26 medals for National Games for the Deaf Aurangabad 2013.

4.The number of disabled persons served and area of work including district/state
  • Through the initiative of FSHC over 200 children with hearing impairment (HI) are enrolled in special education and 1500 person with ear and hearing problems through awareness camps and vocational training for better quality of life.

  11. Sign language classes for parents/ volunteers – 150 Persons.
  12. Exposure programme for teacher trainees (Diploma in Education of the Hearing Impaired, Diploma in Speech, Hearing and Language).
  13. Facilitating Exposure and training to the education, social welfare, health department of the govt. of Meghalaya and the school, college and university students – 3000 + members.
